Ode To New York

One fine sunny New York morn
Twins stood tall and strong
They stood with might; high above all
Until the terror came along

All gave a shriek
It came: a cry of fear
After the explosive impact
Everyone began to tear

They still stood tall
But each with a scar
Then the heroes soon came
From near and from far

The people too
They still stood with pride
And helped the people
On the twins’ insides

They worked for hours
All with hope on their mind
They helped the young and the old
Maybe even the blind

Many got out
They were now safe and alive
But there were still people in there
Which still could survive

No matter the circumstances
Our heroes did not stop
And something worse happening
Did not come to thought

All kept on working
Responding to desperate calls
Little did they know
The mighty twins would soon fall

The South fell first
Although the second of the hits
The North collapsed next
After about eleven minutes

The screams and the fear
Now came so much to overwhelm
Through the chaos and smoke
It was an imitation of Hell

Those still on the streets
Dust filled their lungs
It burned their throat
And it covered their tongues

Through the darkness
Which hung in the air
Was the twisted structure
Of the twins that once stood there

Those that were left
Searched through the rubble
It wasn’t their fault
They had caused no trouble

They searched for hours
Days upon end
Searching for life
Under all the rubble and around every bend

Although many lives were lost
The heroes tried their best
Because of them many lived
And they had passed the test

Tis a day we cannot
Forget to remember
No one will ever forget
That day in September

Those who served and never lived
Now proudly lie in a grave
With honour they shall forever sleep
In the land of the free and the home of the brave

In memoriam of all those innocent lives that were taken and the heroes who served on September 11, 2001.

Author's Comments

I wrote this poem in grade 10, 2003, and I find it especially appropriate to submit it today, five years to the day of the event. I think that everyone should see this poem whether they like it or not. I felt obligated to write this poem although I am not American, but as a citizen of the world in which we live.

Five years ago today the world was shocked as New York was targeted by the attacks of terrorists.

My first submission in a long time and also my first into literature.

This is a really good poem, and a beautiful tribute to the 9/11 tragedy. Well done :+fav:

I have far too many ideas, and I procrastinate. A fatal combination.

Your mum...is a nice lady. You, however...*insert insult here*

"You're such a fag!"
"Stop being such a tampon!"
"Stop being such a USED tampon!"
:-o "You go too far!"

We obviously have a different opinion on the event, but I do like your poem.

I find it was a rather shocking day. I'm glad you did not try to force your opinion of anything on me like some would do. And thank you for the comment.

Why have you posted this twice? I still think it's very moving.

Well.... I thought it didn't work, which sucked majorly, so I typed it up. Oh well? And thanks!

And so you think...? Prove it.

Thank you very much. I find that if I was to have done it now, it would be even more profound.
